The most important part of any network marketing business is lead generation. Any pro or consultant will tell their students that great leads equal more recruits and a stronger downline. But one of the fundamental questions for many first-time network marketers is whether you should purchase leads, or generate them. There are two polarized camps in this issue: those who swear by purchased leads, and those who have purchased leads only to realize that their money was wasted on cold or recycled leads.

Determining which type of lead is better for your business requires understanding both types of leads, how they are gathered, and what they mean for your opportunity.

Network Marketing Leads- Purchased Leads

Purchased leads often come from larger websites and companies who specialize in lead capturing. They can range from less than a dollar per lead up to several dollars per lead, depending on the company and the quality. But, most experts agree that paying more for your leads does not always equal quality.

The problem with purchased leads is that it’s difficult (if not impossible) to tell how they were generated. Horror stories circulate of purchased leads that have been promised a gift in return for signing in with their email address, or completely cold leads that never claim to have expressed interest in network marketing.

These network marketing leads can be a risk. At times, they may turn out fine, with lots of prospects that convert into recruits. But other times, a batch of leads can be "bad" and a waste of both parties’ time.

Network Marketing Leads - Self-Generated Leads

Many agree that a way to combat this issue with paid network marketing leads is to generate leads yourself. It’s possible to do this by creating a website with an opt-in page, and then use SEO and traffic driving techniques to draw warm leads to the site. By properly executing these techniques, it’s possible to add several people to a downline daily if thousands of people land on the site in a day. This is how the network marketing pros work; they leverage the power of the internet to capture leads, and then add a few people into their business per day.

Whether purchased or self-generated leads is right for your business is ultimately up to the business owner, but learning how to generate leads can be one of the most cost-efficient (and ultimately, time efficient) ways to start building a network marketing opportunity.
